“Our reality, Dimitrijević seems to be saying, demands that we construct new relationships for ourselves in relation to all inherited social forms—that is, if we don’t want to see the forms themselves slip away into a state of crystallized irrelevance.”—Dan Cameron

Description

Born into a politically inspired and artistically driven household in Sarajevo in 1948, Braco Dimitrijević has lived as if all of life is a work of art, inviting others to experience and participate in this worldview. From the rise of Tito to adventures in Europe with some of the twentieth century’s most important visual artists, Dimitrijević’s The Louvre Is My Studio, the Street Is My Museum delves into the nooks and crannies of history and memory to reveal how they inspired and shaped him, and in turn helped change the very notion of art’s potential.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Braco Dimitrijević’s artistic interventions in urban landscapes and some of the world’s most prestigious museums have made him a pioneer of conceptual art. He has had solo shows at Tate Gallery, Kunsthalle Bern, Museum Ludwig Cologne, and MUMOK Vienna and been a part of major group shows, such as the Kassel Documenta 5, Venice Biennale, São Paulo Biennale, Sydney Biennale, Santa Fe Biennale, Havana Biennale, Kwangju Biennale, and Moscow Biennale. Made Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in Paris in 1992 and in 2005 A.B.O. d’Oro in Rome, Dimitrijević lives and works in Paris.

ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR

Fedja Klikovac was born in 1959 Podgorica, Montenegro, and studied History of Art at the Faculty of Philosophy Belgrade University. Between 2002 and 2005 he ran a “medievalmodern” gallery in Marylebone, where artists worked with chosen medieval artefacts from a private collection. In 2006, he began curating numerous exhibitions with Handel Street Projects. In 2014, the gallery moved to its current location in Islington, where Klikovac continues generating new possibilities and developing critical thinking around contemporary art.
